Background of the Study

The transportation sector is vital to Nigeria’s economy, facilitating the movement of goods and people across the country. However, the state of road infrastructure significantly affects transportation efficiency and costs. In Kogi State, a transit hub for northern and southern Nigeria, the maintenance of road infrastructure remains a critical concern.

Road maintenance costs encompass expenses incurred by governments, contractors, and transportation businesses to ensure roads are usable and safe. Poorly maintained roads lead to increased vehicle wear and tear, higher fuel consumption, and extended travel times, directly impacting the profitability of transportation businesses (Federal Ministry of Works and Housing, 2023).

This study examines the financial implications of road maintenance costs on transportation businesses in Kogi State, highlighting the need for sustainable road management practices to support economic growth.

Statement of the Problem

The deteriorating condition of roads in Kogi State has become a significant challenge for transportation businesses. Despite government investments in road infrastructure, inadequate maintenance leads to frequent repairs and operational inefficiencies for businesses. High maintenance costs often result in increased transportation fares, limiting the competitiveness of these businesses.

Existing research focuses predominantly on road construction, with limited emphasis on the recurring costs of road maintenance and their effects on transportation enterprises. This study addresses this gap by exploring the impact of road maintenance costs on transportation businesses in Kogi State.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To analyze the financial burden of road maintenance costs on transportation businesses in Kogi State.
  2. To evaluate the relationship between road conditions and operational costs for transportation companies.
  3. To propose strategies for reducing the impact of road maintenance costs on transportation businesses.

Research Questions

  1. How do road maintenance costs financially affect transportation businesses in Kogi State?
  2. What is the relationship between road conditions and the operational costs of transportation companies?
  3. What strategies can mitigate the impact of road maintenance costs on transportation businesses?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Road maintenance costs do not significantly affect the profitability of transportation businesses in Kogi State.
  2. Road conditions are not significantly correlated with operational costs for transportation companies.
  3. Strategies to mitigate road maintenance costs do not significantly improve business performance.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focuses on the transportation sector in Kogi State, analyzing data from 2015 to 2025. Limitations include difficulties in obtaining accurate cost data from transportation businesses and government agencies.

Definitions of Terms

  • Road Maintenance Costs: Expenses incurred to repair and sustain road infrastructure.
  • Transportation Businesses: Companies involved in the movement of goods and passengers.

Operational Costs: Expenses related to the day-to-day functioning of transportation companies.
